Steam Trade Hold Explained: How to Remove It
A Steam trade hold means Steam keeps the items you send for up to 15 days before the other side gets them. It happens when your account hasn't been protected by the Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator for at least the last 7 days. Turn the authenticator on, wait 7 days, and your trades go through at once again.
What is a Steam trade hold?
A trade hold is a waiting period Steam adds after both sides accept a trade. The items leave your inventory, but Steam holds them for up to 15 days before they are delivered. The Steam Community Market has the same thing for selling: a market hold keeps a new listing off the market for a while before buyers can see it.
Why does Steam hold trades?
Holds protect accounts that aren't secured with a phone. If someone gets into your account and trades your skins away, the hold gives you time to notice, change your password and cancel the trade before the items are gone. With the Mobile Authenticator, every trade has to be confirmed on your phone, so Steam doesn't need that extra time.
When does a trade hold apply?
Steam holds items leaving your account when the Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator hasn't been active on it for at least the last 7 days. That covers accounts without the authenticator and accounts that turned it on less than 7 days ago. The hold lasts up to 15 days.
How to remove a Steam trade hold
1. Install the Steam Mobile app on your phone and add the Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator to your account.
2. Keep it on for 7 days. After that, Steam stops holding your trades and market listings.
3. Confirm each trade in the app when Steam asks.
There is no faster way: the 7 days are Steam's rule, and no trading site can skip them for you.
What happens if you cancel a held trade?
If you cancel a trade while Steam is holding it, Steam assumes you stopped someone who got into your account, and puts a 7 day trading cooldown on it. Steam Support can't lift that cooldown. Only cancel a held trade if you didn't make it.
Trade hold vs. trade protection
They are two different things. A trade hold delays a trade before it completes. Trade protection, added to CS2 in July 2025, starts after a trade completes: the items you receive arrive at once and you can use them in game, but for 7 days they can't be traded on, sold or changed, and the trade can still be reversed. Reversing a trade puts your account under a 30 day trading and Market restriction. Our complete guide to trading CS2 skins explains trade protection in more detail.
Trade holds on SkinStash
SkinStash never adds a hold of its own. When you sign in, the site checks your Steam account and tells you if Steam would hold your trades, and for how many days. If Steam would still hold a trade, the bot stops it instead of leaving your items waiting for up to 15 days. Set up the authenticator, wait the 7 days, and try again. You'll also need your Steam trade URL saved in your profile.
The 7 days in your SkinStash balance
One SkinStash rule uses the same 7 days. Balance from a CS2 deposit spends on CS2 skins straight away, but on TF2 items only after 7 days, because a CS2 trade can still be reversed in that window and a TF2 trade can't. Balance from TF2 key deposits and from cashback is clear on every game at once. Your 1% cashback lands once the 7 day reversal window has passed.
